ALL workplaces need to take action when the AQI (air quality index) for PM2.5 is above 151, to protect workers from wildfire smoke.
Wildfires are an increasing concern in the US. Effects of smoke inhalation can have negative impact on:
Schools, Hospitals & Nursing Homes
Communities & Outdoor Public Spaces
Places of Work & Offices
Employees must determine employee exposure to PM2.5:
- Before each shift
- During each shift
- Periodically thereafter
- As required
- At indoor and outdoor workplaces
This includes indoor places of work that breathe unfiltered outdoor air unless a measurement is performed to demonstrate the concentration of PM2.5 is lower than the guideline. For worksites covered by the emergency regulation, employers must determine employee exposure to PM2.5 before each shift and periodically thereafter, as needed.
Wildfire smoke is composed of harmful chemicals and tiny particles suspended in the air that present a significant health hazard for workers exposed to it.
These particles can irritate the lungs and cause serious or even fatal health effects, such as:
- Reduced lung function
- Bronchitis
- Worsening of Asthma
- Heart failure
As well as those mentioned, exposure to PM2.5 effects worker productivity, cognitive function, and causes depression and anxiety.
