Vibrating wire strain gauge instrumentation is used to monitor strain in steel or in reinforced concrete. Due to the sensor’s long life and high reliability, vibrating wire strain gauges are the most robust solution to monitor strain in concrete and metal structures. There are five different types of strain gauge, each for differing situations of strain gauge testing. Arc-weldable strain gauges are designed to be welding to a steel structure such as tunnel linings, piles and bridges. The sensor is located between two blocks that are welded to the metal surface Spot weldable strain gauges are designed for application on steel surfaces where installation space is limited. The sensor is located between two small plates that are affixed to a metal surface using a spot-welder. Concrete Surface Mounted strain gauges are used to measure strain in a concrete structure and is mounted directly onto the surface of the concrete using groutable anchors. Embedment strain gauges are directly embedded in concrete for strain measurements of piles, foundations, dams, etc. Sisterbar or Rebar strain gauges are designed to measure strain in reinforced concrete. This sensor is installed by welding the gauge into the rebar cage at a suitable location within the structure.
